Post frame buildings

The Basics: Integrity Post Frame Buildings

Our building system has taken years of experience, engineering and the latest innovations to make the best quality post frame building. We use the highest quality materials and back our buildings with a warranty to match.

1. Posts

The base of strength for any post frame building lies in the posts. Integrity now offers two strong post options.

Our regular posts are made from #2 spruce or better. They are pressed together with plates, glued and then nailed with 4” nails.

New Perma-Column Option for Canadians: Exclusive to Integrity Post Structures in Canada!

Perma-Column Posts
New and exclusive to Integrity in Canada, we are now offering the Perma-Column for post frame. Perma-Columns are precast concrete columns that allow for a concrete foundation on your post frame building. These five foot precast concrete columns keep wood out of the ground, ensuring your building’s foundation will last. They are the first product to combine the economy of post frame construction with the durability of a concrete foundation.

2. PWF Lumber

What is PWF? Why is it important for post frame?

Lumber used in Permanent Wood Foundations (PWFs) meets special standards set by the Canadian Standards Association. A higher level of treatment is applied to PWF wood to ensure it lasts for in-ground use (compared to regular treated wood that is used above-ground, such as in decks or fences).

Treated wood used in PWF looks similar to regular treated wood, so be sure to look for the qualification stamp and incised markings of a “for underground use material” and make sure your post frame company uses only this approved material.

Be aware that some companies just treat the outside of the finished post—which will undoubtedly affect its lifespan. As well, some companies use artificial treated lumber that is not meant for use underground. Using “un-stamped” lumber on the column of your post frame building can drastically decrease the life of your posts.

Some post frame companies construct their posts on site by hand nailing laminations together without using a press. This means posts are not glued or may not have a tight bond between laminations, which can potentially lead to early de-lamination of ply’s within a structural column.

3. Lumber

We use kiln dried 2 or better lumber which is stronger, has better “hold” for nails and screws, less likelihood of stain or decay, and better heat insulation and preservation.

Be aware that some companies use wet or inferior lumber that is cheaper. Wet lumber is more prone to loose cladding. It can also give a moldy black appearance to your wood frame.

4. Walls

Strong Integrity walls have 2” x 6” strapping placed 2’ on centre to ensure a firm wall system.

5. Engineered Trusses

Our engineered trusses are secured in every two posts to ensure structural integrity you can count on.

6. Metal

At Integrity, we use a superior large 3/4” rib metal that comes with the best 40–year paint warranty to ensure we’re doing the most we can do to prevent fading. The metal used in all Integrity buildings is attractive, strong and has a long lifespan.

When shopping for a post frame building, be aware that all metal is not the same. Many companies offer only the 20–30 year paint warranty on their metal. This metal has a smaller rib, a shorter lifespan and fades faster than the superior larger rib metal.

Features of metal used in Integrity buildings:

  • Superior 3/4” rib metal
  • Available in a wide variety of colours
  • Manufacturer’s warranty for 40 years on coloured metal walls and roof

7. Durable Roof Purlins

Our roof purlin system is built to 2’ x 6’, 2’ on centre for extra strength.

8. Lighting

On an uninsulated building, consider a clear ridge light for natural sunlight the length of your building.

We also off the Smoke Wall Light, which ensures no glare, and has only five per cent less lighting than the original.
